Detailed, accurate and complete digital landslide maps are still rarely produced, although such maps are essential for supporting emergency services and authorities after landslide-triggering events, as well as for hazard and risk mapping. New computational methods such as object-based image analysis (OBIA), and the increased availability and quality of Earth Observation (EO) data foster attempts to automate the production of landslide maps.
The main objective of the presented project is to develop innovative OBIA mapping routines that are automated and at the same time flexible to changing input data and geographical settings, and hence generally applicable. The most stable routines will be implemented in a pre-operational service which allows for automated EO-based landslide mapping, and which will be designed close to the requirements of users who are involved in the project.
In addition to the core products, i.e. the landslide mapping routines and web service, a comprehensive report will be provided, documenting the results of the validation process including user assessment and exploitation strategies, as well as comprising experiences and recommendations on the use of various optical EO data sets and OBIA approaches for automated landslide mapping.
