ATROMSAF2
Short Description
Starting point / motivation
With the ATROMSAF2 project the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change (WEGC) and the EUMETSAT Radio Occultation Meteorology Satellite Application Facility (ROM SAF) further tighten the close partnership started in the CDOP-3 first-half period by the ATROMSAF1 Federated Activity.
Contents and goals
We aim to build a fully integrated Research-to-Operations (R2O) Twinning System that links WEGC's R&D system to ROM SAF's operational system at all processing levels (Level 1a to Level 4).
Methods
The specific ATROMSAF2 goals, taking on from ATROMSAF1, have been jointly defined by WEGC and ROM SAF to include the following four high priority aims:
- Analyze the structural uncertainty of ROM SAF Level 1b processing based on cross-evaluating the ROM SAF and WEGC processors, with focus on tropospheric bias effects;
- Ingest the Chinese FY-3 GNOS Level 1a datastreams into the ROM SAF R2O Twinning System for re-processing and evaluate the Level 1b retrieval quality vs. MetOp GRAS;
- Enhance ROM SAF Level 2 and Level 3 data quality and validation by asymmetry and collocation bias estimations and linking to radiosonde and IR limb sounder validation data;
- Innovate the provision of ROM SAF Level 4 climate data products by prototyping and demonstrating QBO/ENSO climate variability index and decadal climate trend products.
Expected results
We expect this ATROMSAF2 Federated Activity work to be of substantial benefit to next improvements of ROM SAF's operational weather and climate products, in particular also for the upcoming next ROM SAF re-processing late 2020, and for supporting the joint strategy of WEGC's full integration into the ROM SAF in the follow-on CDOP-4 phase.
