SATIDA

Satellite Technologies for Improved Drought-Risk Assessment

Short Description

The assessment of risks related to drought and possible subsequent food insecurity requires the consideration of parameters related to the hazard itself in relation to levels of vulnerability. Current drought indices neglect the latter part and mainly focus on anomalous conditions in the atmosphere.

However, in case of agricultural drought in particular soil moisture anomalies play an important role. Consequently, the project goals are to improve a drought index with satellite-derived datasets, to test the index' forecasting capabilities and to develop a mobile phone application that facilitates rapid assessments of vulnerabilities and access to relevant information in affected regions.
