MMS-DFG 3

DFG magnetometer aboard NASA's MMS mission: System level testing, commissioning and advanced data processing

Short Description

This is a follow-up project of MMS-DFG 2 funded by ASAP 7, comprising spacecraft level testing and commissioning of four space magnetometers (DFG), which were built and calibrated under the precursor project for NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, in-flight calibration of spin axis offsets of the MMS fluxgate magnetometers, and generation of an advanced magnetic field data product by combining data from the fluxgate and the search coil magnetometers.

All tasks are essential for mission success. The required accuracy of the magnetic field data, being key to mission success, can only be achieved with successful calibration of the spin-axis offsets and the combined magnetic field data product is going to be an indispensable tool for the investigation of electron diffusion regions and thin current sheets, which is one of the primary mission objectives.
