Highly versatile satellite sensor applications - the Future of Austrian‘s Earth Observation Satellite Service Capacity

Short Description

Building upon the results of the ASAP8 project HighSens, the proposed successor project HighSens II aims at completing the original proposed and new key technological component developments towards a routine, fully automated satellite based land monitoring in Austria.

It will finally "set the roof on the Land Information System Austria (LISA)". According to the realistic business scenario new business from HighSens-II is estimated to amount to a leverage of 1:10 and therefore to 5 Mio€ for the project consortium until 2017.

Specifically, HighSens-II will

  1. develop and benchmark a performant Pléiades processing chain for fully automated, large scale orthorectification, serving users with a precision needed for "cadastre like" 1:2.500 scale urban mapping and outperforming existing commercial solutions as provided by ASTRIUM;
  2. develop and validate a Pléiades based 3D prototype product for urban mapping applications, offering superior information content for spatial planning applications with the prospect for wider market uptake by Austrian public administration;
  3. develop a Sentinel-2 based pattern recognition method to enable a predictive tasking capacity, supporting users to significantly reduce costs for future VHR image acquisitions and change assessments, as well as to strengthen Austrian EO industry's position for future ESA opportunities and in European Land Monitoring;
  4. promote the developed capacities to provide Pléiades and Sentinel-2 based service solutions to qualify Austrian EO service suppliers as high level industry partners and to qualify future European investments.
