Austrian Academy of Sciences - Commission for Astronomy

Essential aims of the Commission for Astronomy are the coordination of scientific exchange and cooperation on research, as well as the transfer of scientific knowledge to the public.

The coordination of scientific exchange with national institutions (e.g. Österreichische Gesellschaft für Astronomie und Astrophysik ÖGAA) as well as with international institutions and unions (e.g. International Astronomical Union IAU, Astronomische Gesellschaft AG, Astronomy & Astrophysics A&A, European Association for Solar Telescopes EAST) is maintained and intensified.

Within the scope of cooperation on research the Commission for Astronomy aims to establish a scientific network built on the Austrian expertise in astro- and space physics with the purpose of identifying relevant research topics, which can be put into collaborative proposals by the scientific working groups of astrophysics and lithospheric research of the University of Vienna, astro- and particle physics of the University of Innsbruck, space research of the corresponding institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (IWF Graz), and astrophysics of the University of Graz (IGAM).

The promotion of openness of the society towards science and technology in the above mentioned topics is fostered via Public Outreach (media, educational institutions, Littrow Lectures, "Science goes School").
