United Nations Conference on Space Law and Policy 2024

This conference aims to promote adherence to the five United Nations treaties on outer space and assist States in implementing these treaties, thereby supporting their Sustainable Development Goals. The event will highlight the importance of international and regional cooperation in peaceful space activities and the development of national space programs. Key discussions will focus on the role of international space law in promoting these efforts and the need for adequate education opportunities in space law, especially for developing countries.

Content Description

The objectives of the Conference will be to:

  • Promote understanding, acceptance and implementation of the United Nations treaties and principles on outer space;
  • Promote the exchange of information on national space legislation and policies for the benefit of professionals involved in national space activities;
  • Consider the contribution of space law to economic and social development, and the use of space-derived geospatial data for sustainable development;
  • Consider trends in and challenges to international space law;
  • Consider mechanisms for increasing regional and international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space;
  • Consider the development of university-level studies and programmes in space law, with a view to promoting national expertise and capacity in this field; and
  • Discuss novel areas in which international space law could provide potential legal models to balance divergent interests of States.

Target Audience

The Conference is being planned for a total of 200 participants including decision- and policy-makers from national space agencies and governmental bodies, experts from the space community, private sector representatives, researchers/students from academia that are involved in space activities, representing developing and developed nations from all economic regions.

The Office seeks to achieve the balanced participation of women and men to ensure gender parity.

The completed application form together with the presentation abstract should be submitted on-line to the Office for Outer Space Affairs, no later than 30 August 2024 from applicants seeking funding support and no later than 30 September 2024 from self-funded applicants. Only complete applications received before these deadlines will be considered.
