FEEP Cluster - Generic FEEP Cluster Qualification

The goal of this research task is to demonstrate the long operating capabilities required for such missions that may exceed several thousands of hours as well as to build a cluster of several emitters that can still be operated by a single high voltage power supply. This cluster has to comply with increasing thrust demands by the satellites.

FRESSCO - Searching the Link Between Fretting Tests and Shaker Tests for Cold Welding

The project covers a detailed investigation of fretting phenomena during launch. The main challenge is to simulate conditions expected during the launch of a satellite. One part (one material) is subjected to very high acceleration and frequency while a second moves "freely" on it. Furthermore, the project will cover a review of requirements for testing, design, set-up and verification.

FRPBonding - Bonding Technologies for Fibre Reinforced Plastic

The goal of this project was to identify the best adhesive to avoid disbonding between metal and fibre reinforced plastic.

GATE - Generic ASIC Test Environment

The Generic ASIC Test Environment (GATE), that has been developed in the present project, is a tool for the time-saving and cost-effective verification and validation of ASICs and FPGAs for satellite on-board electronics.

GPS Receiver - Global Positioning System Receiver Software Modules

The project aims at designing and developing software modules for a navigation receiver for space applications complements and at developing the so-called Innovative Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Receiver.

GRAS - Galileo Road Application Simulator

GRAS is a simulation and verification tool to support satellitepositioning and navigation technology and to particularly demonstrate the expected Galileo system and service characteristics at selected Points of Interest (POI) in the urban area.

GS M&C - Ground Segment Monitoring & Control

The goal of this project is to design and develop basic components for a generic, state-of-the-art Monitoring and Control (M&C) System for monitoring and controlling both hardware equipment and running software applications.

HERSCHEL/PACS - The Austrian Participation in the ESA-Cornerstone Mission HERSCHEL: On-board Data Reduction and Compression

The Herschel Space Observatory (formerly know as FIRST, theFar Infra-Red Space Telescope), a cornerstone of ESA's Space Horizon 2000 programme, will for the first time facilitate the investigation of the far infrared and submillimetre radio regime of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is not accessible from the ground. In this wavelength range the primary research goals will be in the fields of stellar evolution, development of planetary systems, interstellar matter and the origin of galaxies.

High Performance Superinsulation for Long Term Vacuum Stability

Within this project Beyond Gravity wants to perform a research and development programme concerning specific thermal insulation for use in vacuum insulated double wall steel tank systems for storage of liquid gas as Helium or Hydrogen. Such tank systems shall be used e.g. in medical applications or hydrogen propelled cars. Hydrogen propelled cars may become important for the deployment of sustainable energy sources.

I-Game NG - Integrated Telemetry and GIS-System for Wildlife Management Next Generation

The project aimed at developing a telemetry system based on GPS and GSM technology which provides generally higher data rates due to additional energy generation on the animal.

ISS-SLEEP-KIT - Sleeping Bag for the International Space Station

The aim was to investigate the feasibility of designing and testing a sleeping bag for ISS. The methodology used included the fabrication of a prototype from material used on ISS such as Nomex-based textiles. The development of the sleeping bag involved a total of three design iterations based on feedback from European astronauts.

Metallic Melts 2 - Electrical Resistivity Measurement of High Temperature Metallic Melts - 2

This project has directly continued the research done in the frame of its preceding project "Electrical Resistivity Measurement of High Temperature Metallic Melts". Unlike its predecessor, it focuses on the measurements of alloys. The pulse heating setup at TU Graz serves as a benchmark for the results obtained from the levitation setup of DLR. The latter is designed to be carried out in microgravity environment. At this stage, parabolic flights with prototypes prepare for a future mission aboard the ISS.

MountainNet - Management of Natural Resources in Alpine Regions by Advanced Remote Sensing Techniques

To assess and monitor alpine landscape and hydrological parameters and thus to serve as the basis for planning actions, the project concentrates on methods and algorithms for alpine land use and land cover based on SAR, alpine land use and land cover based on VHR optical data and hydrological applications in alpine regions based on SAR.

NEST - Next-Generation Equipment for Satellite Testing

The Power Subsystem Special Check-Out Equipment (SCOE) is a central component of the Electrical Ground Support Equipment. It provides power and control signals to the satellite during assembly, testing and launch preparation until just a few seconds prior to lift-off. The activity aims at reducing the manufacturing complexity of the overall Power SCOE system emphasising standardised components (leading to reduced costs and improved reliability) and making the system operator’s user interface more intuitive (leading to easier operations procedures and to a high acceptance by the test engineers).
